In biological wastewater treatment systems, a specific kind of biofilm carrier called MBBR Media (Moving Bed Biofilm Reactor Media) is employed. Fluidized Aerated Bed (FAB) and Moving Bed Biofilm Reactor (MBBR) systems depend heavily on MBBR media, which is made to maximize the treatment process and increase microbial activity. These media are compact, lightweight, and incredibly resilient plastic components that offer a sizable covered surface area for the formation of biofilms, facilitating the effective biological breakdown of organic contaminants.

MBBR media, which are made of premium virgin HDPE or polypropylene, are made to float freely in aeration or treatment tanks. Improved BOD, COD, nitrogen, and phosphate removal results from the continuous motion, which is aided by aeration or mixing and guarantees optimal interaction between the wastewater, the biofilm, and the oxygen.

Design & Construction

In order to optimize surface area while guaranteeing smooth movement and self-cleaning, MBBR media are commonly available in cylindrical or star-shaped geometries with complex internal arrangements. Because of their buoyancy, they can stay suspended and evenly distributed throughout the tank, extending the time that microorganisms come into contact with one another and enhancing the effectiveness of treatment.
